I wrote a post on Monday about a group of lady’s who are over 50, who were inspired by a poem to inject a bit of fun and friendship into their lives.

Realizing how poems can inspire and be an avenue for a creative outlet The Ellenbrook Library and Ellenbrook Secondary College both embraced poetry as part of National Numeracy and Literacy week.

Students made pocket sized scrolls with poetry scrawled on the inside – these ‘Poems In Your Pocket’ were then distributed at the school, library and other places in the community for people to be able to pick up a poem on the go. What a great idea! Another great community initiative in Ellenbrook.

The following is an extract from the Echo Ellenbrook News, article by Rashelle Predovnik January 17th 2015

THE welfare of 200 kangaroos in Ellenbrook has been under the spotlight this week following a push by concerned residents to ensure they would be relocated safely by the developer.

Residents have kept a watchful eye on a mob of kangaroos that live on Millhouse Drive and will be shot with tranquilizer darts, then relocated.

Ellenbrook resident Julie Church said she thought the kangaroos would be moved this week and residents were worried about their welfare.

She said many people were extremely concerned the Department of Parks and Wildlife, which signed off on the operation, would not have qualified animal welfare carers onsite to help.

“The wildlife carers I contacted over the weekend are very concerned that a contractor will carry out this work without vets and wildlife carers at site at the tranquilising and more importantly the release point,” she said.

“They said the kangaroos will be extremely distressed and very often abandon their joeys out of the trauma of the procedure.
“So there needs to be carers at both points to pick up abandoned joeys and help the animals that will injure themselves.”

Ms Church said details about the release point had not been released and residents wanted to know if sufficient research had been done to ensure there would be enough food and water for the mob over the long hot summer months ahead.
Stocklands project manager Stuart Sinclair said an approved contractor would move the kangaroos soon but a date for the move had not yet been finalised.

A Department of Parks and Wildlife spokesperson said the kangaroos would be moved to a state forest in Sawyers Valley that had plenty of water and food.

He said there would be a vet onsite and the process would be done as humanely as possible.

Ms Church said residents would continue to stay in touch with the department and local native animal care groups hoped they would have the opportunity to offer a helping hand when the transfer took place.

Swan Valley Realty attended the Local and General Markets on Saturday and gave out free yummy snow cones to visitors. There was a smaller turn out for these markets compared to the one in September. This was primarily due to the Swan Valley Anglican Community School’s Fun Day. Never the less my two beautiful helpers and I enjoyed the day once again.

Northlink WA, also known as the Perth Darwin National Highway is on track with its planning. The project development phase of the $1.12 billion highway is expected to be finished in August 2015, highway construction is expected to start in late 2016 and be finished in 2019.

Although some parts of the highway will come as close to 20-30m to some Ellenbrook homes this has been stated as being similar to many other highways around Perth and noise monitoring has started at some sites.

A spokeswoman for Main Roads said noise modelling was required but could not be finalised with certainty until the final road geometry was completed. Future noise modelling may indicate that noise attenuation is required to ensure compliance with the noise level limits of the Western Australian Planning Commission road and rail noise policy. I took my little monsters to Halloween at the Marshalls on Friday night in Aveley and was so impressed with the effort the Marshalls went to to put on a great Halloween event for the community. It is getting so popular we had to wait in a line to go through the haunted tunnel. And scary! My daughter not only screamed but also cried!! For more photos of the night go to their Facebook page at Halloween at the Marshalls.

A relocation program is being considered by developers and the government for the abundant kangaroos in the area. Department of Parks and Wildlife said between 150 and 200 kangaroos could be relocated to Gorrie State Forrest block, just south of Chidlow and The Lakes. Culling is not being considered at this stage. Instead the kangaroos will be tranquilized and transported about 50km away.

The wildlife population faces competing with the 4700 eventual homes and two town centres that will be built by Stockland as part of Vale. Stockland say they will retain more than 26 per cent of the site for bushland and wetland conservation and reserves that will be accessible as public open space.

Congratulations to Aveley Primary School for being one of six entrants to win a place in The State Final of Wakakirri – Australia’s largest performing arts event for primary schools.

The schools performance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar won the Wakakirri Best Comedy Story Award and a music award.

48 students practiced for two months every Tuesday after school for 2 hours. All their hard work paid off and teacher Chris Spencer says there has been a huge interest in performing at the school and that the kids that preformed this year will have a better idea next year and can help others so it creates a momentum.

The Aveley Avengers club currently offers Auskick and Footy Fundamentals programs to more than 100 youngsters aged between two and nine. Next year the club will expand its involvement in the Swan Districts football competition with a junior boys and girls team. This year 46 of the juniors got the chance to play halftime during the final between Fremantle Dockers and Port Adelaide.

Aveley Avengers vice-president Natasha Cheung said the funding from the WA property developers will have a huge impact. She said it will help lift the profile of the club and allow them to keep expanding. Some of the money will go towards purchasing a range of equipment and jumpers for the 2015 season.
